Good Bye Resolutions

Welp, we’re just over two weeks into the New Year and my [very unofficial] resolutions are completely shot. Which is ironic because I made a legitimately fun resolution – eat a donut every day, aka #DonutADay. Turns out there really is such a thing as “too much of a good thing”. Donuts are awesome…but finding a decent one to eat every day is quite the task and after a while donuts get boring! My new plan? Have fun eating donuts - lots of donuts - for the rest of my life. I think I can manage that!

Random Fact: sugar donut + chocolate stout = awesome combo!

My other resolution of the year was rather accidental. Over a week into the New Year I realized I had not yet had any caffeine…that’s just weird. I have a bit of a Mountain Dew problem but somehow I had gone without for 8+ days without even trying to avoid caffeine. It’s like the resolution was just waiting for me to claim it…so I did. Of course, I knew I wasn’t going to give up caffeine long term – it’s a vital part of [my version of] ultra running. I made it a few more days before Starbucks offered me a free drink and I caved. My new plan here? Enjoy my caffeine intake, not *need* it for survival. I’m definitely not giving up my beloved Mountain Dew but it doesn’t need to be a daily staple.

Do I feel guilty for bailing on my not-even-that-official New Year’s resolutions? Heck no. Life is way too short to get my undies in a bunch over sugar laden goodies. I have more important things to focus on, like actually running legit distances and finding a balance in my life that works. Those aren’t resolutions…those are just a few of the things it’ll take me to be the me that makes me happy right now. [Yes, it is all about me…duh!]

Maybe taking awkward #summitselfies should be a resolution of mine…or maybe a goal, I can’t decide…

Which brings me to something that has had me #headdesk’ing a lot lately – why do people find it so important to distinguish between a resolution and a goal the first day of ever year?  They are extremely similar with a lot of shared synonyms. So, what’s the difference?! Well, if you Google their definitions and you’ll see that the definitions are semantically different…which means, yes, there is some level of differentiation between the two words.

However, when “New Year’s Resolutions” are a bit of a tradition why must people make the seemingly pretentious distinction between the two?! Why do so many people say “Oh, I’m not making a resolution, I’m making a goal…” in a tone that seems to scream I-am-not-calling-it-a-resolution-so-my-success-rate-will-be-better-than-yours? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t judging you for saying that… You’ve waited until the new year to chase after this goal of yours, you’re following the tradition of a “New Year’s Resolution” and you’re flaunting this resolution/goal/whatever all over the internet so drop the attitude and just roll with it! Geez…

*consciously puts own judging attitude away, until next year and eats another donut…just for good measure*
