Take It Easy

Every time the seasons change I get sick, without fail. Sometimes I blame it on airplane cooties [like that time I nearly died from a ferocious head cold + sketchy stomach flu the week I got home from South America] but really, I think my immune system is just a big wimp that sucks at fighting off the bad guys. And I don’t care how old I am, I will always imagine white blood cells shooting sticks at these nasty germs like they do on the Magic School Bus >> https://youtu.be/uJKJr7gKS_Y [and, yes, I watched that entire episode after I found it!].

Last week my body did its lazy thing and let the cooties win. I didn’t feel like crap, I just sounded like a preteen boy waiting for his voice to change while mass producing disgusting snot. It was super attractive. It also made swallowing and breathing a miserable task. Rather than stick with gung-ho plans to go frolicking in the mountains I took it easy. Lucky for me + my “but, I’m in Switzerland, I must do things” thinking there are a lot of “take it easy” options here in Gryon. Things like…

…a trip to the grocery store that takes three hours + includes scenic single track, fall colors, mountain streams, bell ringing cows + a return trip with a backpack full of food.

…a short train ride that takes you to a village of cafes + chalets built around ski lifts, surrounded by low hanging clouds with miles of swooping single track leading back down to the valley.

…a telecabine/gondola with bike racks for a few hours of easy downhill mountain biking [tested some fancy, full suspension bikes at Test Bike Gryon] that will leave your tush hurting for days.

…miles on miles of narrow mountain roads lined with colorful trees – and sometimes snow – that make road running fun, for long distances + #runabler speed work.

…nifty full suspension scooters you can take up the tram then ride down the mountain — they are WAY more intense + hardcore than I make them look here, I was afraid of breaking my face!

…and lots of rock climbing where kids are part of the fun + even a newb like myself can try out lead climbing on sport routes [where I climbed the hardest routes of my life!].

So, while I might be taking it easy, I’m definitely not going to run out of things to do! This is the beauty of staying in one place for an extended period of time — you get to know the countryside, the city and the people. I may not check all the big adventures off my to-do list before winter weather takes over but I’ll hang onto that list, it’ll come in very handy when I’m planning my next trip through Switzerland. And if you’re in the area? Check out Chalet Martin — you’ll find a great place to stay + they’ll point you in the right direction for all of these things and more!

I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself and still getting super fun stuff in your schedule. Kudos to you for realizing you needed a moment or two. I’m honestly SO. BAD. at that. Also, my impetus to comment was definitely the Magic School Bus reference. If I could be Ms. Frizzle, all of my life goals ever would be complete. And now I’m going to go spend some time with that youtube link. 😉

It’s so easy to be go, go, go…and your body is never nice when it tells you no! Blah! But, I do have some pretty awesome views from the house on my lazy days, too! 😉 I never watched the show [no TV as a kid], but I read all the Magic School Bus books and clearly had a vivid imagination that paired well with the stories + photos!

[…] outside and find trails to explore! I’ve done a fairly good job of winning the fight against the snot factory that took over my sinuses but the weather has not been very good at supporting my quest to spend all my free time outside. […]
