There is a really good chance you saw this coming. Its been in the works for months and I did my best to keep everything under wraps until it was officially official and now it is…

Come September I will be shaking in my Saucony’s at the start line of the Run Rabbit Run 100 mile race in Steamboat Springs!

Looking back this all started with an email from Paula when she was in search of a last minute sub for a leg of the Wild West Relay. I jumped all over the opportunity, spent three days with some incredible runners and was eyeballing a full trail marathon before I got around to unpacking my stinky relay layers. One thing led to another and before I knew it I was headed to Steamboat to crew Run, Rabbit, Run for Nick and other crazy runner friends had convinced me to register for the Bear Chase 50K.

Nick wasn’t nearly as miserable during the race as I’d expected and my 50K was far less painful than any road marathon I’ve ran. I was back on the trails the next day. Somehow I talked Paula into verbally committing to the North Fork 50M at the end of June. In October we ran two segments of the Colorado Trail together and actually enjoyed the full 28 miles. I don’t think we spent more than 5 minutes in silence. This is when we convinced each other that 100 miles was a good idea.

It took some guts to say it out loud but I finally fessed up. I wanted to do the Run Rabbit Run 100. To my surprise Paula didn’t trip me for being stupid. Instead she was supportive. Eventually she even agreed it sounded like a good challenge…for both of us. She was on board! And now there is no going back – we are both registered for the race/run/trudge through the mountains near Steamboat.

Here goes nothing. Or everything. I’m not sure how to look at that yet!

Run Rabbit Run 100 Mile Race #RRR100
Turns out I’ll happily pay a bunch of money to suffer for 100 miles if you repay me with a hug at the end…

And just to keep my year interesting I kind of impulse registered for the Quad Rock 50M in May. I was only going to do the 25 mile loop but then the 50 was only another $10 so I bit the bullet and hit register. The North Fork 50M is still on the calendar in Sharpie (registration isn’t open yet) and there will definitely be more races tossed in just for fun but the big goals of the year are surviving Quad Rock without sacrificing snowboarding for training and Run Rabbit Run without hating my life for very long.

So there you have it – my big news of the year.
Exactly one year after my first ultra experience I’ll be running my first 100 mile race.
Its, very literally, going to be a long year and I am so excited to see how it all plays out!

I hope it’s an amazing, injury-free year for you! 100 miles is a huge step, but I think if I had someone doing it with me as you do (and lived in trail running country) it might seem more possible too.

Happy training Heidi!!

P.S. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t think you’re totally crazy because you have a buddy & you’ve already done an ultra and a lot of trail running to work towards this. 🙂 Happy trails, to you… (Do you know this song?)

Wow. You are amazing. And seriously brave. I am just broaching the thought of another full and you’re on to a 100 miler. Way to be a badass!

    Heidi Nicole · January 12, 2021 at 2:17 pm

I think that in the world of ultras brave is quite similar to crazy. But I’ll take it! 🙂

Way to go! If you have questions I have a friend who races the Bear 100 last year and has done the Wasatch 100 three times. Lots of little things My husband learned pacing him… Like inability to use fingers after mile 70. Of course it was 20 degrees and snowing…

    Heidi Nicole · January 12, 2021 at 2:23 pm

Thank you! There will be lots of random research going down this summer! Taking in every tidbit of information I can!

Lauren @ Me and the Mountains · January 10, 2021 at 7:25 pm
